As with many trades and arts, training and education are required to build the foundational knowledge to be successful and effective at the art of massage. There are many different programmes and courses that allow students to study and practice the art of massage and to take the first step in building a career in massage therapy.
Some important considerations when selecting a program include considering local requirements and making sure that the certificate and the program selected is recognized within their desired jurisdiction, whether that be where they live now or where they plan to live and work.
The requirements differ from country to country and can even differ from state to state. These programs include different classes in anatomy, kinesiology, sociology, ethics. In addition to classwork, it is often necessary for 
students to complete a certain number of practical or hands on hours.
After completing the program or certificate, taking a national certification is the next step in the pursuit of a career in massage therapy. These exams differ from place to place but often require that students to come into a physical location and take a regulated exam. The board exams allow students to be deemed professionals and solidify their knowledge and understanding and be considered professionals in the selected jurisdiction.
The next step is then getting a license which then allows a massage therapist to get a job working in a clinic or even to open their own practice. Jobs in massage therapy range from spa jobs to sports medicine. This is not the end of the road in terms of education as professionals in the world of massage are required to partake in continuing education to ensure they stay up to speed in the profession.
